Every Saturday afternoon, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth discussion of films new and old, led by Village member Mel Washburn. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after!
This week’s movie is The Third Man (1949): 1hr 44min, RT score 99%
One of the all-time classics. Welcome to post-WW2 Vienna, Austria, where adorable but clueless Holly Martins (Joseph Cottens), writer of pulp westerns, arrives penniless at the invitation of his old chum Harry Lime (Orson Welles). But Holly arrives ten minutes too late, just after Harry’s body was taken away in a coffin. The more Holly hears about how Harry died, the less he believes that what he is hearing is true. So he decides to do his own investigating with the help of Harry’s beautiful, grief-stricken girlfriend Anna (Alida Valli). One of the best directed movies of all times (Carol Reed)–you’ll see why from the very beginning–and with an unforgettable zither score by Anton Karas. A pure joy.
