SUMMARY:The Sorting Space
DESCRIPTION:This event is now full\, please email info@thevillagechicago.org to join the waitlist. Thank you. \nThis monthly group creates a supportive community where we can talk openly about our challenges with “stuff”. \nNavigating your “stuff” can feel overwhelming\, but you don’t have to do it alone. Through discussion\, shared experiences\, and a peer accountability system you’ll gain the encouragement and motivation to take meaningful steps toward simplifying your home. It’s also a place to share ideas and learn about helpful resources along the way. \nWhether you’re actively planning a future move\, just want to get your home in order\, or simply desire a less cluttered life\, this group meets you where you are. Without pressure or judgement\, The Sorting Space provides community\, guidance\, and one manageable step at a time. \nThis group might be a perfect fit for you if… \nYou look around areas of your home and think\, “I really need to deal with all this…”\nYou want to be prepared “just in case” for yourself or your family.\nYour past decluttering efforts have stalled without accountability.\nYou’re thinking about downsizing or moving\, whether in a couple years or “someday.”\nDecisions about belongings feel emotionally complicated or overwhelming. \nWhat you’ll gain: \nA clear\, manageable path forward \nBy breaking the process down into manageable steps\, an overwhelming project becomes achievable. You’ll learn to take things one room\, category\, and decision at a time\, to build momentum without burning out. \nMethods for thoughtful decision making\nWe’ll explore practical frameworks for deciding what to keep\, donate\, sell\, or pass along to loved ones\, so you can move forward with confidence\, not regret. \nCommunity and Accountability\nPeer accountability makes all the difference. Group members will set monthly intentions\, share progress\, and cheer each other on. Tackling challenges and celebrating successes together can even make the process fun! Knowing others are doing the work alongside you provides solidarity\, motivation\, and encouragement to keep going. \nEmotional support\nOur belongings can carry all sorts of memories\, grief\, or feel like a part of our identity. The Sorting Space is a safe place to honor those feelings while continuing to make progress alongside others who truly understand.\nProfessional Guidance \nEach session features professional insights and real-world strategies for navigating family conversations\, logistical snags\, or mental blocks that are keeping you from reaching your goals. \nAbout our Facilitator \nMarnie Dawson is the owner of Dawson Relocation Services serving the Chicagoland area. Her small but mighty team has been helping seniors and their families with the downsizing and moving process since 2008. She is an active member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) and she is a board member of the Illinois Continuity of Care Organization. Her passion is finding new and creative ways to navigate the emotional challenges of letting go. \n

SUMMARY:Managing Stress and Trauma with the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) Part 1
DESCRIPTION:This is part one of a two part series. The second part will take place on August 18 \nThe Community Resiliency Model (CRM) provides a resiliency-informed approach to\ntrauma and toxic stress by teaching simple skills that are accessible to all. It teaches us that people are\nresilient\, and skills of well-being can be cultivated to reduce suffering. CRM is both trauma-informed and\nresiliency-informed care; it invites us to get to know our nervous systems and our internal sensations.\nCRM is a biological model\, focused on our physical sensations. Our brains have an enormous ability to\ngrow and adapt. The concepts of neuroplasticity and neurogenesis show us that what we pay attention\nto grows! \nOutcomes: Participants will learn about toxic stress and trauma\, and the body’s natural responses to\nthese stressors. We will learn about Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and Positive Childhood\nExperiences (PCEs)\, and what they teach us about the human capacity for resiliency. This session will\nintroduce three of the six CRM skills: tracking\, resourcing\, and help now. \nPresenter Bio: Maureen Burns (she/her/ella) is the Director of Community Health and Northside\nCommunity Health Worker /Promotora de Salud with The HAP Foundation. The HAP Foundation is a\nnonprofit leader with a refined focus to elevate access to and increase understanding of serious illness\nand hospice and palliative care through community and clinical education\, workforce development\,\nresearch\, and advocacy. Maureen works in and around Chicago\, providing free community education\nand linking patients and loved ones to resources within their community. She has over 20 years of\nexperience working in health care\, a Bachelor of Arts degree in community health\, culture\, and aging\,\nand a Master’s degree in Public Health. In 2022\, Maureen became a certified CRM teacher through the\nTrauma Resource Institute (TRI). \n

SUMMARY:Managing Stress and Trauma with the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This is the second part of a two part series. The first is on August 11. \nThe Community Resiliency Model (CRM) provides a resiliency-informed approach to\ntrauma and toxic stress by teaching simple skills that are accessible to all. CRM is about empowerment; it teaches that regardless of our external stressors\, we can\ndevelop skills that help us widen our resiliency zone\, which is the zone where we can show up as our\nbest selves. \nOutcomes: There are common human reactions to stressful/traumatic events that affect the mind\, body\, and spirit. CRM helps individuals learn to read their nervous system to return to their zone of well-being\, called the Resilient Zone\, through the use of simple wellness skills. Participants will learn about how trauma impacts implicit and explicit memory. We will introduce the final three skills: grounding\, gesturing\, and shift & stay. \nPresenter Bio: Maureen Burns (she/her/ella) is a Community Health Worker /Promotora de Salud with\nThe HAP Foundation. The HAP Foundation is a nonprofit leader with a refined focus to elevate access to\nand increase understanding of serious illness and hospice and palliative care through community and\nclinical education\, workforce development\, research\, and advocacy. Maureen works in and around\nChicago\, providing free community education and linking patients and loved ones to resources within\ntheir community. She has over 20 years of experience working in health care\, a Bachelor of Arts degree\nin community health\, culture\, and aging\, and a Master’s degree in Public Health. In 2022\, Maureen\nbecame a certified CRM teacher through the Trauma Resource Institute (TRI).
