SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s film is:  \nTruth: 2015\, 125min\, Amazon & others $4\n(make sure you get the 2015 film with Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford)\n\nIn 2004\, Dan Rather and his producer Mary Mapes aired a story that then-president George Bush evaded military service in the early 1970s. Whether the story is true doesn’t seem as important as whether the story has holes\, which it does\, and for which some heads are going to roll. With Robert Redfoord as Rather and Cate Blanchett as Mapes and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Topher Grace as fellow journalists. If this happened today\, CBS would be forever banned from the White House.

SUMMARY:The Sorting Space
DESCRIPTION:This event is now full\, please email info@thevillagechicago.org to join the waitlist. Thank you. \nThis monthly group creates a supportive community where we can talk openly about our challenges with “stuff”. \nNavigating your “stuff” can feel overwhelming\, but you don’t have to do it alone. Through discussion\, shared experiences\, and a peer accountability system you’ll gain the encouragement and motivation to take meaningful steps toward simplifying your home. It’s also a place to share ideas and learn about helpful resources along the way. \nWhether you’re actively planning a future move\, just want to get your home in order\, or simply desire a less cluttered life\, this group meets you where you are. Without pressure or judgement\, The Sorting Space provides community\, guidance\, and one manageable step at a time. \nThis group might be a perfect fit for you if… \nYou look around areas of your home and think\, “I really need to deal with all this…”\nYou want to be prepared “just in case” for yourself or your family.\nYour past decluttering efforts have stalled without accountability.\nYou’re thinking about downsizing or moving\, whether in a couple years or “someday.”\nDecisions about belongings feel emotionally complicated or overwhelming. \nWhat you’ll gain: \nA clear\, manageable path forward \nBy breaking the process down into manageable steps\, an overwhelming project becomes achievable. You’ll learn to take things one room\, category\, and decision at a time\, to build momentum without burning out. \nMethods for thoughtful decision making\nWe’ll explore practical frameworks for deciding what to keep\, donate\, sell\, or pass along to loved ones\, so you can move forward with confidence\, not regret. \nCommunity and Accountability\nPeer accountability makes all the difference. Group members will set monthly intentions\, share progress\, and cheer each other on. Tackling challenges and celebrating successes together can even make the process fun! Knowing others are doing the work alongside you provides solidarity\, motivation\, and encouragement to keep going. \nEmotional support\nOur belongings can carry all sorts of memories\, grief\, or feel like a part of our identity. The Sorting Space is a safe place to honor those feelings while continuing to make progress alongside others who truly understand.\nProfessional Guidance \nEach session features professional insights and real-world strategies for navigating family conversations\, logistical snags\, or mental blocks that are keeping you from reaching your goals. \nAbout our Facilitator \nMarnie Dawson is the owner of Dawson Relocation Services serving the Chicagoland area. Her small but mighty team has been helping seniors and their families with the downsizing and moving process since 2008. She is an active member of the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM) and she is a board member of the Illinois Continuity of Care Organization. Her passion is finding new and creative ways to navigate the emotional challenges of letting go. \n

SUMMARY:Hang out with Mother Nature in a Corn Maze
DESCRIPTION:Hang out with Mother Nature in a Corn Maze  \nHost: Marcia Whitney\nSaturday\, October 3rd\,  Pick up at 9:30 a.m.\nCost: $14 per person. Pay at the farm.\nAddress: 13236 W. Townline Rd. Waukegan IL 60087. Figure about an hour’s driving time (north). \nIt’s fall and that means finding your way through a maze of corn. Visit Kroll\, a family  farm near Waukegan with different themes each year. This year’s theme is Roots of America. In the first portion of the maze\, one finds answers to questions that will be posted in several parts of the maze. Answer the questions correctly on the easy download app\, and you’ll get a small prize. Figure about an hour to get through the maze. You’ll be able to see your location on the app\, and besides we’ll be together. Dress for the weather\, that means sturdy shoes or hiking boots. Having done this maze for years\, I can tell you—it’s perfectly delightful to be surrounded by tall stalks of corn. Visit the farm animals\, buy a Halloween decoration at the local crafts store\, select a pumpkin\, and eat a cider doughnut. \n\nTell the Village if you want a ride or can give a ride. Let’s amaze ourselves in the maze! Email Jessica@thevillagechicago.org to register. \n

\nThis week’s film is: \nFirst Wives Club: 1996; 103min; on Amazon\, free with commercials\, $4 without\n\nGoldie Hawn\, Diane Keaton\, and Bette Midler play college friends reuniting after 30 years. They’re all divorced and their ex-husbands are schmucks. When they discover the reason for their friend’s suicide\, they create the First Wives Club and decide it’s time for revenge on their exes. Very funny and sometimes silly\, the film was a box-office hit in 1996. Directed by Hugh Wilson (Blast from the Past\, Guarding Tess). Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker\, Maggie Smith and with cameos by Gloria Steinem and Ivana Trump.\n\nSorry for the technical difficulties yesterday. Maybe we’ll discuss Don’t Say Good Luck next week a bit. A really well done coming of age movie with a lot of heart and standout performances from Sunny Sandler (Adam’s daughter) and Melanie Lynsky (from Heavenly Creatures).\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Fall Bird Walk at Montrose Point - Led by David Baker
DESCRIPTION:Come join Village member David Baker for a late afternoon bird walk at Montrose Point.  We will welcome back the warblers and others that we saw in the Spring as they make their way from their nesting grounds in Wisconsin\, Minnesota and Canada and seek warmer climes for the winter.  It’s a fun challenge to identify the fledgelings and the adults as their bright colors of spring are gone. We don’t call them “confusing fall warblers” for no reason.  We will meet at 4 pm at the entrance to Montrose and conclude by 5:30.  Wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes.  Bring your binoculars too. \n\n\n\n\nIt looks like a normal\, overgrown strip of bushes on the lakefront. But Chicago’s “Magic Hedge” at Montrose Point is actually a happy accident leftover from the Cold War. \nBack in the 1950s\, the US Military took over this exact spot to build a secret Nike missile base\, designed to shoot down Soviet bombers if they ever attacked Chicago. To hide the ugly barracks from the public\, the military planted a thick wall of honeysuckle bushes. \nEventually\, the military left and the missile silos were demolished\, but the bushes remained. \nBecause Montrose Point juts out so far into Lake Michigan\, it creates a geographical trap. Millions of exhausted songbirds flying south for the winter see this tiny strip of green bushes and drop out of the sky to rest. \nToday\, the “Magic Hedge” attracts over 300 different species of rare birds\, making it a world-famous destination for bird watchers and a completely serene\, hidden escape for locals. \nHave you ever walked the trails at Montrose Point?
