SUMMARY:Quality of Life Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Location: Via Zoom\nMembers & guests: free. \nThis group will meet bi-weekly. Please make sure to register each time to attend. \nThe purpose of this group is to give Village members the opportunity to discuss quality of life issues in an \ninformal\, non-judgmental group setting. It will be led by Murray Manus\, a Village member who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and who has a private\, online therapy practice. The group will be held via Zoom. Anyone can attend any session but you must RSVP in advance as there is a limit of 8 people per group meeting. \nTopics to be discussed will include such issues as: healthy relationships\, life fulfillment\, anger management\, conflict resolution\, getting one’s needs met\, and the like. Hopefully\, by attending\, you can gain some insights about how to successfully address problem areas in your life and achieve more joy and life satisfaction. \nMurray Manus is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Illinois and has been a social\nworker for over 15 years with a concentration in mental health. He has worked in community\nmental health for many years\, where he led groups every week\, and for the past 4 years has\nhad his own personal online therapy practice. In his therapy work he relies primarily upon the\nprinciples of humanistic therapy and positive psychology\, which focus upon a person’s\nstrengths and what is right with them rather than what is “wrong”. He helps people identify their own inner strengths and facilitates their ability to use those strengths to create the most\njoyful\, fulfilling and meaningful life possible.

SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nThis week’s film is Hoosiers: 1986\, 1hr 54min\, R.T. 92%\, on Amazon and others. Watch beforehand and join for a lively conversation!\n\nCelebrating Gene Hackman\, here’s a traditional high-school sports drama from the 1980s. Failed college coach Gene Hackman is hired to coach a small Indiana basketball team. Like most outsiders in a small Indiana town\, no one likes him. He has to earn the trust of the town\, his players\, himself. Does he succeed? It’s a great\, quiet\, well-done story based on a true story from the 1950s. Dennis Hopper got his only acting Oscar nomination for the film as the recovering alcoholic assistant coach. Also with Barbara Hershey. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars.

SUMMARY:Modern Choices for After Life Care
DESCRIPTION:Members & guests- free! \nLocation- via Zoom \nOnline registration for this program has ended. Zoom information below\, if you are interested in attending. Stay posted for information about our September and October sessions of this series.\n\nDuring this virtual session\, we’ll learn about evolving trends and options in body disposition. Learn the key differences between traditional and green cremation and burial\, emerging technologies in the death care industry\, and innovative approaches like Organic Human Reduction (composting) as well as body donation to science. Whether you’re planning ahead or simply curious\, this session offers valuable insights into meaningful\, environmentally conscious\, and science-supportive choices.\n\nAbout the presenter: Brooke Benjamin is a partner at Inclusive Funeral Care (IFC)\, a lower-cost alternative to the funeral home system. \nA Chicago-born Funeral Director and Celebrant with nearly 30 years of experience\, her main purpose in life is to be useful to others. She finds people endlessly\, boundlessly fascinating. \nIFC performs burials\, funerals\, cremations\, celebrations of lives\, pet services\, dispositions\, merchandise. Green Options available. \nIFC ‘s philosophy: beyond disposition of human remains\, The Law\, and spiritual/religious imperatives\, whatever path a family chooses should promote (rather than preclude) healing and preserve an individual’s memory. \nSome clients don’t give one iota about healing or memory and value efficiency/affordability above all\, and that’s fine\, too. Different strokes for different folks\, and this should not be highway robbery. \nwww.InclusiveFuneralCare.com \n\n \n \n\nWhat is the Chicago Area Villages Collaborative? \n\n\nThere are eight “Villages” in the Chicago area\, all part of the International Village Movement—grassroots organizations of older adults designed to help people age and thrive in their communities. Each Village reflects its community and leadership. \n\n\nWe invite you to contact a Village in your area to learn more about what we do and how you can join. \n\n\nSouth Loop\, Bronzeville: South Loop Village\, https://www.southloopvillage.org/ \n\n\nOak Park/ River Forest: Arbor West Neighbors\, https://www.arborwestneighbors.org/join \n\n\nSouth Side/Hyde Park: Hyde Park Village\, https://www.chpv.org/ \n\n\nFar North Side: Edgewater Village Chicago https://www.evchicago.org/ \n\n\nNorth Shore suburbs: North Shore Village https://www.nsvnetwork.org/ \n\n\nEdgewater Beach Apartments: LiveAgeWell\, https://www.liveagewell.com/ \n\n\nStreeterville\, River North\, Gold Coast\, Loop: Skyline Village Chicago https://www.skylinevillagechicago.org/ \n\n\nLincoln Park\, Near North side: The Village Chicago https://www.thevillagechicago.org/ \n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth discussion of films new and old\, led by Village member Mel Washburn. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s film is Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019): 2hr.40min\, R.T. 86%\, On Amazon & others \n\nQuentin Tarantino’s ninth film takes us to 1969 Hollywood where actor Rick Dalton (Leo DiCaprio)\, who used to be great in Westerns and a TV show\, is struggling to stay significant\, or just recognized. He pals around with his stunt double Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt)\, who chauffeurs him everywhere (why is funny … and sad) and who consoles him when he’s down. They live in a nice house next to Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate (brilliantly played by Margot Robbi) … and not far from a really cool commune where lots of attractive young women hang out\, one being Margaret Qualley (Demi Moore’s better half in The Substance). Nominated for best picture\, director\, screenplay\, actor\, supporting actor academy awards. Brad Pitt won for his role.

SUMMARY:Crossing the Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Location: via Zoom\nMembers & guests: free.\n\nDeath Cafe has evolved! Crossing the Bridge is a safe space to share personal feelings about death as we support and learn from each other. In addition to exploring our own thoughts\, we talk about books\, films\, legislative developments\, organizations\, and other topics related to death and dying. All are welcome! \n\nFor August\, host Gloria St John will be sharing a special presentation on Sacred Thresholds. \nSACRED THRESHOLD: A Guide to Creating Sacred Time and Space for the Dying\n“Sacred” – worthy of awe and respect\n“Thresholds” – points of spiritual transition where time seems to stand still\nSacred Threshold is a guide to creating a sacred environment for dying whether at\nhome or in the hospital. The idea of the sacred is larger than\, and separate from\,\nreligion\, although the two ideas have been confused\, with the result that the\nsacred has been systematically excluded from ordinary culture. Most end of life\npreparation focuses on legal and medical preparation with little thought given to\nthe actual final time. Sacred Threshold shows how the weeks\, days\, and hours of\none’s death can be transformed into a more meaningful experience with\nintention and the use of ordinary objects that soothe the senses. Although this\nmay not be desired by or possible for everyone\, for those who want it\, Sacred\nThreshold makes it easy to prepare for this experience\, whether one’s own or\nanother’s. Join Gloria St John in this clear and motivating PowerPoint\npresentation. \n\n

SUMMARY:Quality of Life Discussion Group
DESCRIPTION:Location: Via Zoom\nMembers & guests: free. \nGroup meets bi-weekly on Fridays. Please register each time and email celebrate@thevillagechicago.org if you need to cancel. \nThe purpose of this group is to give Village members the opportunity to discuss quality of life issues in an informal\, non-judgmental group setting. It will be led by Murray Manus\, a Village member who is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and who has a private\, online therapy practice. The group will be held via Zoom. Anyone can attend any session but you must RSVP in advance.
