SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nStreaming on Amazon & others \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth discussion of films new and old\, led by Village member Mel Washburn. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s movie is The Ice Storm (1997) 1hr\, 53min\, R.T. Score 86%\n\nDysfunctional-family films are fascinating when done well. Ang Lee (Brokeback Mt\, Sense & Sensibility\, The Wedding Banquet\, Life of Pi\, …) directed this star-studded tale that takes place in a New England town during a Thanksgiving holiday. Kevin Kline is married to Joan Allen and is sleeping with Sigourney Weaver\, and they all attend a key party at Allison Janney’s while their kids (Tobey Maguire\, Christina Ricci\, Elijah Wood) are getting into their own mischief. It all culminates with an ice storm. Gene Siskel ranked it #1 of 1997; Ebert gave it 4 stars\, and listed it in his honorable-mentions. See if you recognize Katie Holmes as Tobey Maguire’s love interest.

SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free\nStreaming on Amazon for $3.79 to rent and $14.99 to own & other platforms \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth discussion of films new and old\, led by Village member Mel Washburn. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week the group is watching Say Anything (1989)\, 1hr 40min\, Rot. Tom. 98%\n\nWe’re continuing with another Cameron Crowe (Almost Famous) film. This 1989 film is much more than an average teenage romance. High school senior John Cusak(a well-liked optimist with no future plans) asks out the beautiful valedictorian Ione Skye and\, to everyone’s surprise\, she says yes. Heralded as a really well-written script (Cameron Crowe — Jerry Maguire\, Vanilla Sky)\, with extraordinary acting\, particularly by John Mahoney as the father. If the film ever seems sophomoric\, stick with it. The dialog’s amazing.
