The Cabrini-Green housing complex at the edge of the Lincoln Park neighborhood inspired television shows, rap songs, and a slew of urban myths. But did its construction and demolition provide any answers to better housing the poor or creating more affordable urban housing?

In his acclaimed new book, High-Risers: Cabrini-Green and the Fate of American Public Housing, Chicago writer Ben Austen dissects in a novelistic and eye-opening narrative the life and death of the iconic public housing complex. Join us as Austen discusses Cabrini-Green, the history and present Near North Side and what changes to the neighborhood mean for affordable housing, development, and Chicago’s future. A ticket includes a book, a barbeque dinner and Austen’s presentation followed by an audience Q&A and book signing.
