About Great Books, Great Conversations
On the first Wednesday of each month at 7:00 PM, fourteen Village members meet in a member’s home to discuss a selection from an anthology published by The Great Books Foundation. Each anthology contains a complete play or short novel, short stories, essays, poems, and excerpts from longer works. When the group finishes discussing all the readings in one book, it selects another from the Great Books catalog.
Most readings are thirty-plus pages in length. Typical discussions have covered Plato’s The Apology, Rothschild’s Fiddle by Anton Chekhov, and Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad. Discussions are usually led by Village member Mel Washburn, who has a Ph.D. in English from the University of Chicago and for a few years taught literature and writing to undergraduates at various colleges. Beginning in August 2019, the group will be following the reading anthology Great Conversations, Volume 3.
