We may catch the ageist acts of others and feel disappointed in how our society processes aging. We may be aware of how the media portrays growing older, and how that influences us, with headlines such as “70 and still looking good in a bikini!” or, “too old for politics?” becoming the norm. However, it takes a different lens to consider whether ageism has become a part of your own stream of consciousness. Are you guilty of feeding into the stereotype? It’s easy to look in the mirror and feel unhappy about gray hairs, wrinkles, or to question whether your style is still relevant. In August’s Health Hub, we will tackle the concept of internalized ageism. Join us to start the conversation about stifling the stigma.
Meet the Contributor: A founding Village member, Laurel Baer started volunteering for the Village shortly before it opened in June 2009 and became a part time staff member in 2010. She worked in marketing for nearly 40 years, in advertising agencies and as a sole practitioner consultant. In her current role, she helps shape strategy, planning and communications for most major Village initiatives. Her proudest accomplishment was founding Bottomless Closet in 1991, the first nonprofit free business apparel resource for women transitioning from assistance to work.
