Silver Screenings: Bambi (1940)

In making this film, Walt Disney focused on two aspects: realistic movement for the animal characters and an impressionistic technique for scenery. He created a small zoo at the studio, with young deer, rabbits, squirrels, and skunks, which his illustrators studied to render their characters. (There are no humans in the film.) The techniques for scenery were based on traditional Chinese painting, applied through a multi-layered arrangement of transparencies. We will watch a fully restored print that allows us to appreciate the film’s artistry. Since Bambi is only 70 minutes long, we’ll also watch a short film on the method for rendering scenery.
