Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare play the “funny looking” and eerily quiet thugs Macy’s character hired. This was Ebert & Siskel’s #1 film for 1996.

With the aid of native Sharif Ali (Omar Sharif)\, Lawrence defies the orders of his superior officer and strikes out on a daring camel journey across the desert to attack a well-guarded Turkish port. De Niro plays a bus driver who’s trying to instill his kids with ethics and a sense of purpose. But his nine-year old son Calogero (a name even the characters have to get used to) would rather look up to the neighborhood gangster (Palminteri)\, who garners respect in a different way and who becomes a father figure to young\, and then young-adult Calogero. A beautiful coming of age film set in 1960s New York. The story began as a one-man play and then played on Broadway after the film’s success. Roger Ebert gave it four stars.\n

In 2002\, Toda Haynes’ (I’m Not There\, Carol) made Far From Heaven\, his version of the melodrama\, crossing racial and sexual lines too controversial for the 1950s. Julianne Moore plays the perfect housewife with the perfect husband Dennis Quaid. Moore was nominated for best actress\, and the film for screenplay\, cinematography\, and score. Ebert put it at #4 for the year.

This 2009 documentary looks at five or six of them\, interviews men who have slept with them\, and argues that promoting anti-LGBT legislation while living a closeted gay life is a hypocrisy. Included subjects are Larry Craig\, Ed Koch\, Charlie Crist\, and others. Maybe you can think of some politicians not included. Is it fair to out them? Although the group has been meeting for years\, they are very welcoming to new members! \nBeginning in December of 2023\, the group will be reading from the anthology Imperfect Ideal: Utopian and Dystopian Visions. These short\, engaging readings illustrate the best and worst of what can happen when we attempt to mold the complex communities in which we live into our vision of a perfect state. All 23 selections in this anthology challenge readers to question how society should be structured and governed\, as well as what kinds of communities are most conducive to human fulfillment\, both privately and in the civic arena. The readings are sure to spark conversations that are relevant to current events in our city\, nation and world. \n
