SUMMARY:Saturday Afternoon at the Movies
DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s film is: \nObsession: 2026\, 108min\, R.T. 93%\, Amazon & others for $6\n\nBear\, Nikki\, Sara\, and Ian are coworkers and friends. Bear (Michael Johnston) has a crush on Nikki (Inde Navarrette) and wants to tell her\, but he’s too timid. Rather than telling her\, he makes a wish on a One Wish Willow for Nikki to love him. It works. But it’s not the love he’s been fantasizing about. Made for under a million\, the film has grossed over 500 million. Curry Baker (popular YouTube short filmmaker) directs this horror film that keeps its audience on the edge of their seats\, and it’s not a comfortable seat.

Whether the story is true doesn’t seem as important as whether the story has holes\, which it does\, and for which some heads are going to roll. With Robert Redfoord as Rather and Cate Blanchett as Mapes and Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Topher Grace as fellow journalists. If this happened today\, CBS would be forever banned from the White House.

DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThe Grifters: 1990\, 106min; R.T. score 92%; on Amazon & others $4\nAngelica Huston\, Annette Bening (her sexiest role)\, director Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons\, The Queen\, & many others)\, ahd the screenplay all received Oscar nominations for this dark comedy. Huston\, a grifter\, works for the mob manipulating the odds at racetracks. While in LA\, she looks up her son\, John Cusack\, a grifter like her\, but not as good. Bening plays his girlfriend\, another grifter–maybe more like a grifter in training or wannabe. “The performances are all insidiously powerful\,” said Roger Ebert\, who ranked this film #4 in 1990.

DESCRIPTION:  \nMembers & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s film is: \nFirst Wives Club: 1996; 103min; on Amazon\, free with commercials\, $4 without\n\nGoldie Hawn\, Diane Keaton\, and Bette Midler play college friends reuniting after 30 years. They’re all divorced and their ex-husbands are schmucks. When they discover the reason for their friend’s suicide\, they create the First Wives Club and decide it’s time for revenge on their exes. Very funny and sometimes silly\, the film was a box-office hit in 1996. Directed by Hugh Wilson (Blast from the Past\, Guarding Tess). Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker\, Maggie Smith and with cameos by Gloria Steinem and Ivana Trump.\n\nSorry for the technical difficulties yesterday. Maybe we’ll discuss Don’t Say Good Luck next week a bit. A really well done coming of age movie with a lot of heart and standout performances from Sunny Sandler (Adam’s daughter) and Melanie Lynsky (from Heavenly Creatures).\n\n\n

But during tryouts\, she finds out about her mother’s illness. A simple\, beautiful story where the characters actually care about each other\, something we can all use these days. DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \nThis week’s film is: \nNine to Five: 1980\, 110min\, on Amazon & others $4\n\nCelebrating Dolly\, let’s watch her debut film produced in part by Jane Fonda. It tells the story of three secretaries/assistants (Dolly Parton\, Jane Fonda\, Lily Tomlin) who hate their boss Dabney Coleman\, and for good reason. He’s a “sexist\, egotistical\, lying\, hypocritical bigot\,” and he admits it. The three women fantasize what they’d like to do to him\, and then actually do it. The story is over the top\, almost camp\, but who cares. Parton\, Fonda\, and Tomlin are magic together on screen\, and of the three\, Parton stands out. Roger Ebert said she was “a natural-born movie star” who “contains so much energy\, so much life and unstudied natural exuberance that watching her do anything in this movie is a pleasure.” Dolly was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance\, and received many more nominations for her song.

SUMMARY:Managing Stress and Trauma with the Community Resiliency Model (CRM) Part 2
DESCRIPTION:This is the second part of a two part series. The first is on August 11. \nThe Community Resiliency Model (CRM) provides a resiliency-informed approach to\ntrauma and toxic stress by teaching simple skills that are accessible to all. It teaches us that people are\nresilient\, and skills of well-being can be cultivated to reduce suffering. CRM is both trauma-informed and\nresiliency-informed care; it invites us to get to know our nervous systems and our internal sensations.\nCRM is a biological model\, focused on our physical sensations. Our brains have an enormous ability to\ngrow and adapt. The concepts of neuroplasticity and neurogenesis show us that what we pay attention\nto grows! CRM helps individuals learn to read their nervous system to return to their zone of well-being\, called the Resilient Zone\, through the use of simple wellness skills. Participants will learn about how trauma impacts implicit and explicit memory. We will introduce the final three skills: grounding\, gesturing\, and shift & stay. \nPresenter Bio: Maureen Burns (she/her/ella) is a Community Health Worker /Promotora de Salud with\nThe HAP Foundation. Many critics consider this their best film. Do you agree? Frances McDormand received her first Oscar playing a very pregnant police officer investigating several murders. Her investigation leads her to William Macy (also nominated)\, a very nervous manager of a car dealership. Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare play the “funny looking” and eerily quiet thugs Macy’s character hired. This was Ebert & Siskel’s #1 film for 1996.

De Niro plays a bus driver who’s trying to instill his kids with ethics and a sense of purpose. But his nine-year old son Calogero (a name even the characters have to get used to) would rather look up to the neighborhood gangster (Palminteri)\, who garners respect in a different way and who becomes a father figure to young\, and then young-adult Calogero. A beautiful coming of age film set in 1960s New York. The story began as a one-man play and then played on Broadway after the film’s success. Roger Ebert gave it four stars.\n
