Sorry Manhattan lovers\, but the fim is pretty politically incorrect with Woody Allen dating a 17-year old. Let’s not promote it.\n\nStill celebrating Diane Keaton. By day\, Theresa (Keaton) teaches deaf children. By night\, she hangs out in bars and meets men. A gritty look at the 1970s’ bar scene. Is it accurate? Several critics thought Keaton should have received her Oscar for this film instead of Annie Hall\, which came out the same year (and is now in AMC theaters). Two very different characters. DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nAvailable to rent for $5.99 on Amazon \n\nEvery Saturday afternoon\, join fellow film aficionados of the Village for an in-depth organic discussion of films new and old. Watch the selected film any time–or enjoy the discussion and be persuaded to view it after! \n\nThis week’s movie is: The Life of Chuck: 2025\, 1hr 50min\, R.T. 80%\n\nFrom the Stephen King short story of the same name\, the film tells the story of Chuck’s life in three parts: the very end; one day in the middle; and a stint from his teenage years. His life\, like most of ours\, is simple and extraordinary. A line from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself–“I contain multitudes” (stanza 51)–is repeated several times. Film critics’ most used word describing the film is “magical.” Do you agree? Don’t be afraid to watch it again when you’re done.

A phenomenon when it came out in 1950. Eve Harrington (Anne Baxter) is more than just an adoring fan of Margot Channing (Bette Davis) and a budding actress. Much more. When Eve gets invited backstage to meet Margot and her entourage\, she gets invited to stay with Margot … and then the fun begins. Arguably the best backstage drama\, it recently ranked high on the American Film Inst’s top 100 films. Nominated for a record 14 Academy Awards\, it won for best picture\, best director\, best screenplay\, best costume\, and best supporting actor for George Sanders. SUMMARY:Crossing the Bridge
DESCRIPTION:Location: via Zoom\nMembers & guests: free.\n\nDeath Cafe has evolved! Crossing the Bridge is a safe space to share personal feelings about death as we support and learn from each other. In addition to exploring our own thoughts\, we talk about books\, films\, legislative developments\, organizations\, and other topics related to death and dying. All are welcome! \n\nFor August\, host Gloria St John will be sharing a special presentation on Sacred Thresholds. \nSACRED THRESHOLD: A Guide to Creating Sacred Time and Space for the Dying\n“Sacred” – worthy of awe and respect\n“Thresholds” – points of spiritual transition where time seems to stand still\nSacred Threshold is a guide to creating a sacred environment for dying whether at\nhome or in the hospital. The idea of the sacred is larger than\, and separate from\,\nreligion\, although the two ideas have been confused\, with the result that the\nsacred has been systematically excluded from ordinary culture. Most end of life\npreparation focuses on legal and medical preparation with little thought given to\nthe actual final time. Sacred Threshold shows how the weeks\, days\, and hours of\none’s death can be transformed into a more meaningful experience with\nintention and the use of ordinary objects that soothe the senses. Although this\nmay not be desired by or possible for everyone\, for those who want it\, Sacred\nThreshold makes it easy to prepare for this experience\, whether one’s own or\nanother’s. Join Gloria St John in this clear and motivating PowerPoint\npresentation. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:Members & guests–free \nThis week’s film is Hoosiers: 1986\, 1hr 54min\, R.T. 92%\, on Amazon and others. Watch beforehand and join for a lively conversation!\n\nCelebrating Gene Hackman\, here’s a traditional high-school sports drama from the 1980s. Failed college coach Gene Hackman is hired to coach a small Indiana basketball team. Like most outsiders in a small Indiana town\, no one likes him. He has to earn the trust of the town\, his players\, himself. Does he succeed? It’s a great\, quiet\, well-done story based on a true story from the 1950s. Dennis Hopper got his only acting Oscar nomination for the film as the recovering alcoholic assistant coach. Also with Barbara Hershey. Roger Ebert gave it 4 stars.
