A Bronx Tale, 1993, 121min, streaming on Amazon and others
Robert de Niro directed and starred in this film written by Chaz Palminteri. De Niro plays a bus driver who’s trying to instill his kids with ethics and a sense of purpose. But his nine-year old son Calogero (a name even the characters have to get used to) would rather look up to the neighborhood gangster (Palminteri), who garners respect in a different way and who becomes a father figure to young, and then young-adult Calogero. A beautiful coming of age film set in 1960s New York. The story began as a one-man play and then played on Broadway after the film’s success. Roger Ebert gave it four stars.
