A League of Their Own: 1992; 128 min; free on Netflix, Amazon $4
Let’s help the Cub and Sox with some fun baseball momentum. Here’s a fun, fictionalized account of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League, which started in 1943 with such teams as the Rockford Peaches, Racine Belles, Kenosha Comets. Maybe some of you went to a game. Penny Marshall (Big, Awakenings, Laverne & Shrley) assembled and directed an eclectic cast of characters, including her brother Gary, taking us from recruitment to tryouts, training, play and playoffs. With iconic lines like “There’s no crying in baseball,” the film became an instant classic. With Gena Davis, Tom Hanks, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna, David Statharan. Such a fun film. Enjoy it as you would a baseball game.
