Nine to Five: 1980, 110min, on Amazon & others $4

Celebrating Dolly, let’s watch her debut film produced in part by Jane Fonda. It tells the story of three secretaries/assistants (Dolly Parton, Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin) who hate their boss Dabney Coleman, and for good reason. He’s a “sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot,” and he admits it. The three women fantasize what they’d like to do to him, and then actually do it. The story is over the top, almost camp, but who cares. Parton, Fonda, and Tomlin are magic together on screen, and of the three, Parton stands out. Roger Ebert said she was “a natural-born movie star” who “contains so much energy, so much life and unstudied natural exuberance that watching her do anything in this movie is a pleasure.” Dolly was nominated for a Golden Globe for her performance, and received many more nominations for her song.
