This week’s movie is The Ice Storm (1997) 1hr, 53min, R.T. Score 86%
Dysfunctional-family films are fascinating when done well. Ang Lee (Brokeback Mt, Sense & Sensibility, The Wedding Banquet, Life of Pi, …) directed this star-studded tale that takes place in a New England town during a Thanksgiving holiday. Kevin Kline is married to Joan Allen and is sleeping with Sigourney Weaver, and they all attend a key party at Allison Janney’s while their kids (Tobey Maguire, Christina Ricci, Elijah Wood) are getting into their own mischief. It all culminates with an ice storm. Gene Siskel ranked it #1 of 1997; Ebert gave it 4 stars, and listed it in his honorable-mentions. See if you recognize Katie Holmes as Tobey Maguire’s love interest.
