Sydney Halpern Book Launch at The Book Cellar Lincoln Square

Wednesday, June 17 @ 7:00 pm
Free

Join the Life 3.0 Committee in supporting our long time member, Sydney Halpern, in the launch of her new book Infected for Science!

Around 8PM we will have self-hosted drinks at a pub or bar nearby.

During World War II, religious pacifist David Miller and a group of conscientious objectors signed up for government-sponsored medical experiments intentionally infecting them with hepatitis. Their goal was to help scientists understand a disease sickening US soldiers. Infected for Science joins together Sydney Halpern’s deeply researched narrative, Trygve Faste’s skillful comic art, and grimly humorous cartoons Miller himself sketched. The remarkable story follows the draft objectors through grueling medical procedures and the looming fear of serious illness. What emerges is a gripping, previously hidden history, a portrait of moral courage, and questions about the ethics and human costs of dangerous medical experiments.

“Shocking, enlightening, and uplifting.” Brian Fies, author of Mom’s Cancer

“An ingenious, entertaining, and timely way to communicate the importance of integrating the goals of science and human rights,” Jonathan Moreno, author of The Battle Over Science in America
