As a Certified Forest Therapy Guide, Alyse Rynor merges her love of nature with a  passion for helping others foster a greater connection to themselves by bringing  them into natural environments. She’s been guiding Forest Bathing walks in and  around the Chicago area since 2021. In addition, she is a Licensed Clinical Social  Worker and founder/owner of Soul Choice Counseling, a private therapy practice for  women. Alyse lives along the shores of Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois.

In today’s fast-paced world, we spend far too much time indoors, making us  nature-deprived and affecting our physical and emotional health. Forest Bathing,  also known as Forest Therapy, helps to remedy this. Scientific studies show positive  changes result from time spent in nature, such as a stronger immune system,  lowered anxiety, and slower heart rates. Not a simple walk in the woods, Forest  Bathing is an awakened and thoughtful practice of immersing oneself in the sights,  sounds, and smells of the forest.

These are gentle walks, often covering less than a mile in 2 hours. Along the  way, a Forest Therapy Guide provides instructions, called “invitations,” allowing for  sensory opening activities. We begin by embodying the present moment and place.  Then, through a series of “invitations” made in connection with the forest and   adapted to the needs of participants, you’ll experience, explore, and connect to the  natural world through wandering or stillness. Our time together includes  opportunities for sharing and listening. The walk ends with a ceremony of sharing  tea made from or representing local plants in season. Although anyone can  participate in a forest therapy walk, this one is designed for adults.

After a forest therapy walk, participants often report feelings of peace and  replenishment. Many find that it stimulates a new awareness around a connection  to nature in everyday life. You can embark on this journey knowing that the forest  will give you exactly what you need.
