Reading the Rainbow is a bi-monthly book discussion group featuring a lively conversation of LGBTQ+ texts. People of all identities, including allies, are welcome!
This month’s selection is Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kobabe. This graphic memoir recounts writer and illustrator Maia Kobabe’s life from childhood to young adulthood, focusing on their exploration of gender identity and sexuality. Winning multiple awards upon its release in 2020, Gender Queer became a focal point of culture war discourse and thus the most banned book from 2021-23 and second most banned in 2024 according to the National Library Association. Join us for a nuanced discussion about the book and the role it has played in contemporary culture.
