Escape the crowds, commune with nature, breathe fresh air. Visit Volo Bog State Natural Area, the only open-water bog in Illinois. Then visit the nostalgic Volo Auto Museum or the neighboring Volo Antique Mall.
At the Volo Bog, fifty-six miles northwest of downtown Chicago, a docent will point out floating trees and other natural curiosities not seen elsewhere. Walk in the midst of the bog on a boardwalk (four-tenth of a mile). For those who might feel squeamish about boardwalks, or are mobility-constrained, a naturalist will give an alternative talk in the Nature Center. The bog tour is free. Afterwards, we’ll have a short picnic in the park, so bring your own lunch and drinks.
Then visit the Volo Auto Museum featuring 300 classic and unique cars (Mad Max’s car, etc.). Or browse through the four floors of the Volo Antique Mall. Senior tickets to the Auto Museum are $23. Admission to the Antique Mall is free.
We’ll leave at 9 a.m. on Saturday, June 22 from the Village Office and return late afternoon. We’ll be car pooling. If you need a ride or can give a ride, contact [email protected]. Guest limit is 15 participants.
